How studying data science has helped me to excel in my non-technical role
I have been working in an administrative capacity for the past seven years and because of health considerations I have stayed in that position. For over the past two years I have been studying data science and, although I have yet to make the jump to a paid employment in data science, I have been able to utilise some of the skills that I have acquired in my current non-technical position.
Specifically, in my current role I undertake two areas of the business, being training and trash.
I have to monitor the training of over 120 individuals by taking an Excel spreadsheet and auditing it against a department spreadsheet every month, making changes where necessary.
I put the training files and appraisal file in an Excel notebook, using Excel’s VLOOKUP function to use the staff member’s employee number to determine what team he should be in for all of the pages in the spreadsheet. I then sort the pages so that management can determine which training and appraisals need to be completed.
Once I have audited the departmental spreadsheet, I transfer team statistics to another sheet to determine where the training and appraisal deficiencies in the department lie.
