In my last blog post I discussed how to create a geometric distribution in Excel, and that post can be read here:- https://medium.com/@tracyrenee61/how-to-create-a-geometric-distribution-in-excel-4779c103ab48
In this post I am going to endeavour to show the reader how to create a hypergeometric distribution in Excel.
The hypergeometric distribution describes the probability of choosing k objects with a certain feature in n draws without replacement from a finite population size N that contains K objects with that feature, wherein each draw is either a success or a failure. In contrast, the binomial distribution describes the probability k successes in n draws with replacement.
The probability mass function (PMF) of the hypergeometric distribution is:-
In order to create the hypergeometric, it is necessary to first:-
- Enter the number of successes in cells A3 to A13
- The sample size in B15
- The number of successes in the population in B16
- The population size in B17
