Use Excel’s pivot table to make a grouped frequency distribution

In this post, I intend to use Excel to create a grouped frequency distribution. A grouped frequency distribution is a way of organising a large set of data into manageable groups.

The diagram below is a manually produced grouped frequency distribution:-

Creating an ungrouped frequency distribution is slightly different than creating a grouped frequency distribution. It would be wise to learn how to create an ungrouped frequency distribution before attempting a grouped one.

In order to create a grouped frequency distribution in Excel, it is first necessary to enter the data into the a Excel spreadsheet. In the example below, I have created the column student_name and score. I entered 21 fictitious names in the student_name column and assigned score values from 60 to 100.
