Probability sampling is a technique that involves choosing a population for systematic study based on probability theory. Probability sampling is best used when conducting quantitative research, which focuses on gathering and analysing numerical datasets.

Advantages of probability sampling include:-

  1. Probability sampling reduces the chances of sampling errors and systematic bias affecting the research population.
  2. The sample population has a close resemblance to the research population.
  3. Probability sampling produces highly reliable data.
  4. It is a cost effective and time saving way to method of data collection.
  5. Probability sampling does not require any special skills and is easy to implement.

Disadvantages of probability sampling include:-

  1. Population sampling can be time consuming when dealing with a large population.
  2. Despite randomisation, similar research variables can be chosen that will affect data quality.

There are four types of probability sampling that can be used in systematic investigations, namely:-

  1. Random sampling,
  2. Systematic sampling,
