Member-only story
From 2006 until 2014 I worked for a major player in the oil and gas industry, Foster Wheeler. My job title was Affiliate Coordinator and I dealt with intercompany transactions of this major multinational company.
I really loved my job and wanted to progress within the company to become a cost engineer or a proposal engineer, which would have gone nicely with my National Vocational Qualification(NVQ 4) as a part qualified account and my academic qualification of MSc Finance. Even though I applied for positions in the company that would have been seen as a progression, I was sidestepped every time.
In addition to the fact that I had been held back professionally in a company that was my second home and I wanted to retire at, I had to work with a lot of really unusual characters. I worked with engineers who had some really odd ways. I would love to tell my readers everything, but sadly it is not the scope of this post.
One thing that I did do at my former job was to write a piece entitled “Risk Management in Affiliate Coordination”. I wanted this piece to be published because I was proud of my work, but Foster Wheeler held this piece back from publication. It seemed that not only was my employer holding me back, the people who comprised that entity wanted to hold my work back as well.
