My fraudulent friendship

Introduction

This is a true story, but in an effort to preserve anonymity of the innocent and the guilty, I have had to use pseudonyms for all of the individuals involved in this story.

I will endeavour to tell the story about my friendship with a serial fraudster, Walter, who I befriended for a period of shortly under three years.

There are real newspaper and social media articles about this individual, which I will give a brief summary of. In order to protect Walter’s anonymity (so I don’t get sued) I cannot give the dates of the articles but merely a synopsis of each one:-

  1. There was a piece about Walter masquerading as a Cambridge academic three years ago, but this piece has been removed from the internet.
  2. There was a Twitter (now X) post about Walter, with his photo, by what I assume to be a disgruntled friend, who exposed him, saying that he is a serial fraudster who seeks out vulnerable people to exploit, and is a fantasist. This post has now been deleted from the internet.
  3. There is another Twitter post made two years ago from someone reporting on an airline scandal where Walter was invited to give his side of the story. When I initially met Walter, I knew that he was working with this airline organisation, but I have not heard him say anything more about it so can…
