Depression is a mental health problem that involves low mood or losing interest in or enjoyment of life. The symptoms of depression can vary and its severity can range from mild to severe. People with mild depression may be able to carry on with their day to day life, but those who have severe depression will have more difficulty functioning. Suicidal thoughts are also common in depression.

In my previous post I carried out an exploratory data analysis (EDA) on depressed people in India. This EDA was very illuminating because it revealed:-

  1. Younger people tend to suffer with depression more than older people,
  2. Job satisfaction is inversely proportional to depression. If a person has high job satisfaction he is less likely to be depressed.
  3. Financial stress is a contributor to depression.
  4. The hours a person works or studies will affect depression. If a person works or studies a lot of hours, this can increase feelings of low mood.
  5. The amount of sleep someone gets is inversely proportional to depression. If a person sleeps more than eight hours a day then he is less likely to become depressed.
